Refrigerators make some normal operational sounds, but unusual noises often indicate problems. This guide helps you identify what different sounds mean and when to take action.

Normal Refrigerator Sounds

Before worrying, know these sounds are normal:

  • Soft humming: Compressor operation
  • Gentle whooshing: Air circulation from fans
  • Gurgling/bubbling: Refrigerant flowing through system
  • Clicking: Compressor starting and stopping
  • Dripping: Water during defrost cycle
  • Ice dropping: Ice maker harvesting cubes

Concerning Sounds

Loud Buzzing or Humming

Possible causes:

Ice maker issues:

  • Water valve struggling to fill
  • Ice maker trying to cycle without water
  • Ice jam preventing operation

Compressor problems:

  • Failing compressor motor
  • Relay issues
  • Compressor working harder than normal

Condenser fan:

  • Debris hitting fan blades
  • Worn fan motor bearings

Diagnosis:

  • Locate the sound source (back, bottom, ice maker area)
  • Check ice maker for jams or water supply issues
  • Inspect condenser fan for obstructions
  • If compressor area - call for service

Clicking

Frequent clicking indicates:

Compressor relay problems:

  • Compressor tries to start but can't
  • Relay clicks off, cycle repeats
  • Refrigerator won't cool properly

Defrost timer:

  • Some clicking during defrost cycle is normal
  • Excessive clicking may indicate timer failure

Thermostat:

  • Normal cycling creates occasional clicks
  • Rapid clicking suggests problems

Action: If clicking accompanies cooling failure, call for service promptly.

Rattling or Vibrating

Common causes:

Loose components:

  • Drain pan vibrating
  • Loose compressor mounting
  • Items on top of refrigerator

Condenser fan:

  • Worn bearings
  • Bent blade
  • Debris contact

Compressor:

  • Worn mounts allowing movement
  • Internal component wear

DIY checks:

  • Remove items from top of unit
  • Check if drain pan is seated properly
  • Ensure refrigerator is level
  • Check for visible debris near fans

Squealing or Screeching

Usually indicates:

Fan problems:

  • Evaporator fan (inside freezer) bearing failure
  • Condenser fan (back/bottom) wearing out
  • Something rubbing against fan blades

Compressor issues:

  • Less common but possible
  • Usually preceded by changes in cooling performance

Action: Fan noises will worsen. Schedule service before complete failure.

Grinding

Potential causes:

Ice maker:

  • Ice jammed in mechanism
  • Gear/motor problems

Fans:

  • Severe bearing wear
  • Major debris obstruction

Compressor:

  • Serious internal problems (less common)

Action: Grinding is never good. Turn off ice maker if that's the source. Call for service for fan or compressor grinding.

Popping or Cracking

Usually normal:

Thermal expansion:

  • Plastic and metal expanding/contracting
  • More noticeable during defrost cycles
  • Common in new refrigerators

When concerning:

  • Accompanied by other symptoms
  • Extremely loud or violent sounding
  • Happens constantly rather than occasionally

Hissing

Possible causes:

Normal refrigerant flow:

  • Soft hissing during operation is normal
  • More noticeable just after compressor stops

Water valve:

  • Hissing during ice maker fill is normal

Potential leak:

  • Continuous hissing from unusual location
  • Accompanied by cooling problems
  • Oily residue visible

Action: If accompanied by cooling problems, call for service - may indicate refrigerant leak.

Sound Location Guide

Back of Unit

  • Compressor problems
  • Condenser fan issues
  • Water valve sounds

Inside Freezer

  • Evaporator fan
  • Ice maker
  • Defrost system

Bottom/Front

  • Drain pan
  • Condenser fan (some models)
  • Water supply issues

Top

  • Items placed on refrigerator
  • Water line issues (some models)

When to Call for Service

Call immediately if:

  • Grinding accompanies cooling failure
  • You smell burning
  • Loud banging occurs
  • Hissing and oily residue present

Schedule service for:

  • Squealing fans
  • Recurring clicking with cooling issues
  • Any noise getting progressively worse
  • Sounds accompanied by temperature problems
